From 1900 to the present, facets of the natural history of Western North Carolina and the Great Smokies have been described by various nature writers--including well-known names such as Donald Culross Peattie, Roger Tory Peterson, James Fisher, Edwin Way Teale, Edward Abbey and Scott Weidensaul--who were either visiting for a short while or just passing through. Others in this volume came to stay for extended periods of time or permanently. There are regional describers, environmentalists, ecologists, entomologists, educators, field naturalists, a storytelling.
